World Ocean’s Day – June 2022

Royal Museums Greenwich and TCM Collaborate to Celebrate World Oceans Day with Diverse Artistic Voices

In celebration of World Oceans Day, Royal Museums Greenwich, in collaboration with TCM, proudly presented a captivating group exhibition featuring four talented artists: Aya Mohamed, Richard Devonshire, Amber Cooper, and Jamie Ardor. This unique showcase brought together a diverse range of artistic perspectives, each reflecting on the beauty, power, and fragility of the world’s oceans.

The exhibition explored themes of environmental conservation, cultural connections to the sea, and the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems. Aya Mohamed’s animated video Like the Ocean We Rise focused on the deep cultural ties between coastal communities and the ocean, using fluid animations to evoke a sense of resilience and collective strength. Richard Devonshire presented The Silent World, an animated video capturing the eerie tranquillity of submerged environments and the haunting silence of polluted waters.

Amber Cooper’s Sea Change animated video reflected on the devastating effects of pollution and plastic waste, using abstract and dynamic visuals to illustrate the transformation of marine ecosystems. Jamie Ardor contributed The Reversible Pendulum, a thought-provoking animated video symbolising the precarious balance between human progress and environmental degradation.

Through a variety of animated works and creative approaches, the exhibition aimed to raise awareness of the importance of preserving our oceans while celebrating their awe-inspiring presence. Visitors were invited to reflect on the profound connection between humanity and the sea, leaving with a renewed sense of responsibility and appreciation.

Royal Museums Greenwich and TCM were honoured to collaborate on this meaningful project, championing artistic expression as a powerful tool for environmental advocacy and cultural reflection.
